3. DotMobiFairy

Category "DotMobiFairy" creates your mobile website within minutes. The fairy will lead you through the process. All settings can be modified and adapted later.

Step 1: Site data

Define the basic settings for your site. Be careful when entering data because incorrect data might be detrimental to the functionality of your site.

At least in Europe companies are obliged to publish extended publisher and contact data. DotMobiFairy makes it easy. Just fill in the fields under "Publisher and contact data" and DotMobiFairy will do the work for you and create a publisher page and a contact form. Of course without any legal advice or warranty.

Setting languages: Settings in this field are optional and are only relevant for automatically generated text. You can create content pages as well in languages that aren't listed.

Step 2: Defining the colour set

DotMobiFairy makes it easy to define an appropriate colour scheme. Click on a colourset that best represents your conception. You can modify and optimize every colour later. If you want to preserve a colour set that you created earlier click on "next". Later you can modify and adapt the colour scheme to make it even more appropriate. You will find thousands of possible combinations in category "Design". But for a first step it's easier and faster to use a predefined colour set.

You can scroll through the various colour schemes by using the scroll bar below the window.

Step 3: Content

Here you will find a WYSIWYG-editor to create your first mobile page. Name your page first. For better recognition by search engines you should as well define a short description and some related keywords (separated by comma).

Then you can write text. The editor window provides editing options that are appropriate for mobile websites. When moving the mouse over an icon a popup window will show explanatory text.

You cannot add images now. Finish the DotMobiFairy-process first and then go to "Content" to add images.

Finish

After these three steps the relevant data is collected. DotMobiFairy displays, which pages can be created. The site menu and the first content page are required. You can choose whether disclaimer, publisher and contact data pages should be generated. It is wise to let DotMobiFairy create these pages. That will save a lot of work, and if you don't need them later you can remove them from the menu structure.

After submitting your site will be created. You can see the result in the preview frame and the menu structure will be displayed.

Using the preview frame: Unfortunately there are only a few standards in which websites are displayed on mobile devices. Thus the appearance will differ from device to device.

Before skipping to more detailed editing options we would like to introduce QR-codes to you. You can download these barcodes as PDF or bitmap and publish them. You will find more detailed information in Chapter 9 QR-Codes. You can access this code at any time in category "Site".

5.2. Logo

You might want your logo to be displayed in the header section of your website. Here you can upload a logo file. Please remember that mobile devices have small displays. Your logo shouldn't be wider than 200px. DotMobiFairy will resize larger pictures automatically. But you will have much better quality of your images if you have resized them manually with an appropriate picture editor.

5.3 Access keys

Scrolling and clicking on mobile devices can be difficult. You can use access keys to make it easier to your customers to navigate through your site. If the visitor has activated the use of access keys on his device, a link can be clicked simply by pressing the related key. DotMobiFairy makes it easy to create access key support. You can choose whether and where access keys will be displayed.

6.1 Text

The list on the left displays the content pages you have already created. When you click on an entry, detail information a preview and the related QR-code will be displayed. Click on "Edit" to activate the editor where you can edit the content. For better recognition by search engines you should as well define a short description and some related keywords (separated by comma).

The editor window provides editing options that are appropriate for mobile websites. When moving the mouse over an icon a popup window will show explanatory text.

You can use the buttons to insert images and links. A select box will display available links and images. Besides this you can add external links as well.

6.2 Pictures / Images / Media

You will have to upload images to the server before you can use them. Please remember that mobile devices have small displays. Your logo schouldn't be wider than 200px. DotMobiFairy will resize larger pictures automatically. But you will have much better quality of your images if you have resized them manually with an appropriate picture editor.

Uploaded images will be included in the select box that you can use to insert images into your page.

If you want to provide larger files that your visitors can download, such as videos, flash-lite, java-applets, it is not recommendable to integrate them into web pages. The better solution is to provide them as single downloads. You can upload these files directly to your server and link to them by creating an external link.

6.3 Links

You can add links to your pages just like inserting images. Choose predefined links from the select box or define an external link.

There are even more possibilities than for websites for desktop-computers:

Call:

You can create links that allows users browsing your site on a cell phone to click on a phone number and the phone will directly dial the related number. DotMobiFairy creates predefined call-links for all phone-numbers defined under "Site" and "MyData".

Add to Phone Directory:

Some cell phones allow direct import of numbers into the phone directory. DotMobiFairy creates these predefined links as well.

7. Menu

Remember that pages you create are not automatically accessible. You will have to add them to the menu structure first. Sometimes it might be reasonable not to link pages to the menu structure, i.e. when creating landing pages for special marketing purposes or QR-codes. These pages can be removed from the menu structure by deleting the menu entry without deleting the related content page.

When you click on "Menu" you will see the menu structure so far and a preview frame. When you click on an entry, detail information will be displayed. Click on "Edit" to change the entry. Clicking on "Delete" will delete the menu entry but not the related content.

There are two kinds of menu entries: internal links and external links. You can use external links to unrestrictedly define any link to any valid url.

8. Download

Section "Download" offers you the possibility to download your entire site as a zip file. You can then install it on your server. For information on how to install files on your server please refert to the information from your provider.

Please check the entire site before publishing it!

Additionally we offer the option to download lines of code that can be added to your .htaccess-file on your web server that hosts your online website. Linux servers will then recognize mobile browsers and redirect them automatically to your mobile website. If you don't know how to modify .htaccess-files safely, ask an expert or your provider! Inappropriate modifications can lead to malfunctioning and your site becoming unreachable.

Before installing the modified .htaccess file you should decide whether you really want to use this option. Some smartphones display websites quite fairly. If you have installed redirections it is not possible for them to access your online site.

9. QR-Codes

QR-Codes are a convenient option to make your mobile site accessible more easily. Camera equipped cellphones with a barcode-reader can scan these codes and give direct access to the website.

Some more advanced phones already have a built-in code reader. Other phones can download a reader for free by browsing http://mobicoa.mobi with your cellphone browser. You can download and install the reader instantly. Unfortunately not all camera phones are supported. But in future more and more phones will be capable of scanning these codes.

10. Your data

Section "My Data" enables you to administer your personal data and your password. Private users only need to store a valid e-mail address. Companies are obliged to fill in correct and complete contact data.

Use phone number fields reasonably: DotMobiFairy creates predefined "add-to-directory" and "call" links from your entries.
